What is your name and where are you from?

My name is Jess, and I’m from England.

What sparked your interest in Land Rovers?

I've always loved driving, and Land Rover stood out to me as a brand with vehicles that were built for adventure. Classic Land Rovers, from the Series models to the Defenders, Discoverys, and Freelanders, all had their own unique charm, but they shared a common trait—capability. I was drawn to the idea of packing up my 4x4 and setting off to explore new places, just because I could. That sense of freedom and versatility is what made me fall in love with them.

How did your passion for Land Rovers develop?

It all started when I began writing a blog about my experiences with Land Rovers, but what really fascinated me was sharing other people’s stories—how these vehicles became part of their lives. That passion opened doors for me, leading to opportunities such as attending launch events, participating in Land Rover community gatherings, and eventually writing columns for both print and online magazines. Over time, this journey evolved into my business, Cars & Crayons, but writing will always be close to my heart.

How has your family influenced your passions?

My dad played a huge role in my love for Land Rovers—though at first, he was a bit surprised by my interest. It wasn’t something we had ever talked about, but after I passed my driving test and started looking for a Land Rover, we discovered our shared enthusiasm. He had driven many Land Rovers during his time in the army, but never owned one himself—until we both got into them together. With his background working on farms and as a former tank operator and commander, he encouraged me to go off-road and taught me the right techniques and etiquette, especially regarding respect for the land and others. He’s had some incredible experiences with Land Rovers, though he’d probably roll his eyes at me saying that!

How do you use your talents for your passion for Land Rovers?

Land Rovers unexpectedly led me to a career in freelance writing, something I still do from time to time. Now, my passion fuels my business, Cars & Crayons, where I use my creative skills to design and produce products that are meant to last a lifetime. I believe in slow fashion and sustainability, so I’m always learning new techniques to keep my work as handmade and personal as possible. I print everything myself and continuously push myself out of my comfort zone to master new skills. If it weren’t for Land Rovers, I might not have developed the same drive to explore, learn, and create.

Do you have a favourite Land Rover model?

It depends on the season! All year round, I love a Discovery—spacious, comfortable, and incredibly capable off-road (though not exactly known for their reliability). But when it comes to a hands-on, fix-it-and-go kind of Land Rover, I have a soft spot for the classic 300Tdi.

What are your goals for the Land Rovers in your life?

My goal is simple: to keep driving them, maintaining them, and making memories with them for as long as possible. Every trip, every challenge, every adventure—that’s what Land Rovers are all about for me.

When did you first come across the story of aSLAn?

I first came across Explmore in 2018 through Instagram, which led to a collaboration. Through that connection, I was introduced to the story of aSLAn and the book Strangers Like Angels.

What has been your involvement with the story of aSLAn?

Looking ahead, I hope to collaborate with Explmore and Cars & Crayons to create unique products that honour the story of aSLAn! I’d love to bring that story to life through my artwork in a meaningful way.

Where have you explored more?

In the past few years, I’ve moved from the UK to the Netherlands, which has given me the chance to explore my new home while also reconnecting with my birthplace in Germany (Rinteln) and its surrounding areas. That said, I do miss the Lake District—it might be a cliché, but there’s something about its rugged beauty that keeps drawing me back. I always try to fit in a visit when I’m in the UK, especially on trips to Scotland to see family.

Is there anything else you would like to say about your hopes and dreams?

I hope to continue doing what I love—creating, exploring, and meeting new people—while always learning and growing. My dream is to wake up every morning with my dog, watch the sunrise, and feel grateful for the small things. Even on rainy days, I want to keep smiling and appreciating the journey.
