Who this is for:

Anyone confused about where overlanding is actually allowed.

This is one of the biggest barriers — and one of the most important topics.

First: Access rules matter

Overlanding only works long-term if:

  • we respect access laws
  • we protect routes
  • we don’t give land managers reasons to close them

Doing it right keeps places open.

UK: The basics (simplified)

In the UK, most vehicle-based overlanding happens on:

  • Byways Open to All Traffic (BOATs)
  • Some Unclassified County Roads (UCRs)

These are legal roads, even if they look like tracks.

They are not:

  • green fields
  • footpaths
  • bridleways
  • restricted byways

Knowing the difference matters.

How to find legal routes (UK)

Good starting points:

  • OS Maps
  • Green lane mapping apps
  • Local trail groups
  • Community knowledge

Always:

  • check current status
  • look for seasonal restrictions
  • respect temporary closures

Europe & elsewhere (general rules)

Rules vary massively by country.

General guidance:

  • Some countries allow vehicle access widely
  • Others are very strict
  • Wild camping laws differ

Before crossing borders:

  • research local rules
  • ask experienced travellers
  • don’t assume UK norms apply

A golden rule

If you’re unsure — don’t drive it.

There’s always another route.

Respecting locals & land

  • Drive slowly past homes
  • Don’t block tracks
  • Leave gates as you find them
  • Pack out everything

Good behaviour protects access for everyone.

Your takeaway

Finding legal places to go isn’t about restriction — it’s about freedom that lasts.

When we do it right, overlanding stays possible.

If you’re ready to start overlanding — or start properly — you’re welcome here.
